Our Homeschool Curriculum 2020-2021
We started "back-to-homeschooling" at the end of July, in order to take more breaks throughout the school year. And with so many activities on hold due to the virus, it was nice to jump back into a routine. One of the blessings of homeschooling is being able to set a custom schedule for our family and every year has looked different. "Holy Spirit guide our steps!"
Savannah was 4-years-old when we first made a "back-to-school-brownie". Now it’s a much loved tradition! I was pretty emotional taking these pictures (how do I have a senior in high school?) and thankful that no matter how messy the school days have been, we've been together. How blessed I am to learn alongside these world-changers and to watch our GREAT BIG GOD do miraculous things in all our hearts.
Homeschool curriculum itself is a tool, not the success of home education. The great news is that we are able to customize it to our students, choose books with a strong Biblical Worldview, focus on missions, service, worship, and values important to our family. I also switch up our school year with unit studies, great living books, and have been able to allow my older children to choose most of their electives. I also believe with all my heart that some of the best education doesn't happen in a book. It's digging in the dirt, counting fruit into a grocery cart, learning to pray together, baking Grandma's Pumpkin Bread, and leading a small group at church. As Charlotte Mason said, “Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.”
This little lady loves to paint, dig in the dirt, ride her tricycle, dance around the living room, make messes with playdough, and get into everything her big siblings are doing! I try to focus on time playing, reading to her, and taking her outside first thing in the morning to fill her cup, so she doesn't interrupt her siblings as often. Some days she's on my lap during a spelling test, her big siblings take turns playing with her, or we just take a break to cuddle. Some days homeschooling with a little is difficult (ahem), but what a joy to watch her discover books and life along with her siblings!
